This is the table that existed at the Melville Nauheim shelter on the Long Trail for many many years. The entire top portion had seen many days of use by thousands of AT and LT hikers.
The Bennington Section of the Green Mountain Club had an idea:
Why don't we salvage what is possible and restore this table to usefulness?
Enjoy the pictures in this gallery; they tell the story of hope and restoration better than words
How did the new boards get to the shelter? It is about an hour hike to the shelter along the '20' bars route. We made 4 trips total during the project: reconnaissance, demolition, substructure rebuild, final table top. At each return trip we carried out the older rotten wood. Our team worked the miracle restoration.
